How to retire a master after an approved artwork change
The old master leaves the pick list. The archive notes the date it was retired. The new version number is on the job ticket.
After an artwork change is approved, retire the old master the same day: take it off the pick list, rename it into the archive, and write the date it was retired. The new master uses a new version number. If the old one only stays in a folder, the operator can still click it.

Why it is judged this way
Change one character and leave two masters, and a whole roll can run the old art and still pass inspection, because the old master thinks the old art is correct. Retiring is done in the system, not in an email.
What to compare
| What you see | What to call it | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only the new version remains on the list | You can start | Leave both |
| The old master is only in the archive | It can be looked up when needed | Still one click away |
| The job ticket does not name the new version | Write it first | Guess from the file name |
At job change or when a roll is opened
- Build the new master the same day the art change is approved.
- Move the old master out of the production list.
- The roll-start list checks the version number.
